These rare breeds are unique in the world, they are produced with particularly strict specifications and give high quality meat, the organoleptic characteristics of which are due to the specificity of the geographical area.

Characteristics

Elassona Farm has the only certified abattoir in Greece for Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) lamb and goat from Elassona.

These unique rare breeds are reared according to extremely strict specifications and give high-quality meat with a taste and texture influenced by specific characteristics of the area.

Characteristics: The meat is tender and succulent with a signature taste and pleasant aroma. They have low overall fat, a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids than other lambs and goats, and more linolenic acid.

Specificity of the geographical area

The demarcated geographical zone is mountainous and semi-mountainous and presents a variety of altitudes from 250 m to 2,550 m. 60% of the area is pasture, which is characterized by a wide variety of grasses, herbs, and aromatic plants. The pasture lands of Elassona province include natural pastures, agricultural land cultivated for the production of animal feed and seasonal pasture lands.

Diet

The animals are fed exclusively on mother’s milk.

Respect for the environment

Elassonas Farm, aware of issues of environmental protection, installed and operates an animal waste inactivation unit (rendering) as well as a pyrolytic incinerator to manage all dangerous and non-hazardous categories of animal by-products. Their operation is fully harmonized with all international regulations and national legislation governing the respective industries. In the context of the development strategy as well as the integrated environmental management of its waste, the company’s goal is the construction of an integrated biogas production unit from the aerobic digestion of a mixture of raw materials derived from both the company’s own solid waste and from solid waste and products of the wider area.

Biogas production

Biogas is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. The desired component is methane, but the exact composition of the biogas varies depending on the feedstock used.

Advantages of biogas production and use

The production and use of biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion provides many environmental and socio-economic benefits for the entire population but especially for the farmers involved in the process. The biogas production chain strengthens the local economy, protects jobs in rural areas and increases regional purchasing power. It improves living standards and contributes to economic and social development. The specific investment for the management of the by-products of the Elassona Farm as well as livestock and agricultural waste of the wider area creates significant environmental benefits because it solves an important problem of the solid waste produced, without the unit itself burdening the environment. At the same time it produces electricity and organic fertilizers suitable for organic crops.
